Flanagan’s, is one of the ten founding members of the group, which also holds Kilt Nights four to five times a year at the pub, the most recent on January 6.

The Flanagan’s Burns Night Supper always takes place on the Tuesday closest to January 25th – on January 23rd this year. Dick Mitchell will serve as Mater-Of –Ceremonies this year, as he has for the past nine, New World Celts and other Scots present typically wear Highland Dress to the event. The supper will begin with the piping in and parading of the haggis. Once the haggis reaches the stage, the MC recites “Address To A Haggis,” followed by a ceremonies stab of the traditional meat dish and three toasts, one to “Rabbie,” One to the haggis and one to the piper. Dinner follows, when member of the New World Celts speak about the occasion.

The haggis served to guests at the Flanagan’s dinner is from a traditional recipe made from scratch by the pub’s chef, although the haggis used for in their ceremony is the frozen type available at the Celtic Shop. Scottish entertainer J.J. Smith will provide music after the dinner.

“Our Burns Supper gets better every year,” Trina Cooney, proprietor of Flanagan’s said of the event’s nine-year history. Ms. Cooney said the event is a sell out by reservation each year and that the pub receives reservations even before Christmas, “even while people are still focused on the holidays.”

Local Celts can look forward to celebrating their heritage in town again soon in March on St. Patrick’s Day and again in April, during the Dunedin Highland Games.
